Book of the Week

Room, Emma Donoghue
Picador, London, UK, 2010 (true first)
Little, Brown, New York, 2010.
Long listed for the Man-Booker Prize, 2010

"Jack lives with his Ma in Room, which has a locked door and a skylight, and measures 11 feet by 11 feet. He loves watching TV, and the cartoon characters he calls friends, but he knows that nothing he sees on screen is truly real – only him, Ma and the things in Room. Until the day Ma admits that there's a world outside.

Told in Jack's voice, Room is the story of a mother and son whose love lets them survive the impossible. Unsentimental and sometimes funny, devastating yet uplifting, Room is a novel like no other." [Books to Furnish a Room]

Although this is the sixth novel from Donoghue, some are considering it her 'break out novel.' The fact that she was long listed for the Man-Booker Prize goes a long way to ensuring her even greater recognition, so you can count on future print runs already in the works (even though this book has yet to be released).  The book itself is being well received for those who got their hands on advance reading copies. The U.S. edition will be available through Powells, Amazon, BN (and Independent booksellers near you) on September 13, 2010. Signed U.K copies are available through Goldsboro Books (in the U.K.) starting August 20, 2010.  I noticed someone is already selling a signed UK first on Abebooks.com for just under $50. The other stores listed will be selling at the retail price. All editions are available to pre-order.
