Book Review: Bite Me, a Love Story

Bite Me, a Love Story, Christopher Moore

From the cover:
The city of San Francisco is being stalked by a huge shaved vampyre cat named Chet, and only I, Abby Normal, emergency backup mistress of the Greater Bay Area night, and my manga-haired love monkey, Foo Dog, stand between the ravenous monster and a bloody massacre of the general public.

This is the third in Moore's vampyre love story series and, from what I've read, is probably the lightest in the trilogy but still absurdly enjoyable. Moore's knack for absurd humor keeps the story line light, although at times our narrator (who is blogging the events in the book as they happen), Abby Normal, is a bit grating with her pseudo teen-goth/punk dialogue. "'Kayso, I'm paying for my stuff, I go 'So, why are you guys still open at midnight?' An Bob goes, 'Well, you know how it is, you never know when someone is going to need to free their dark lord in the middle of the night, or tie him up.' And I'm all, 'Ewww.'" You get the picture. Still, once you're in the rhythm of the dialogue, it whips right along (& you just know that Moore had a ball writing it). And for those Moore fans who enjoy returning and cross-over characters, you won't be disappointed. This book is a pantheon of characters from other story lines.

If you haven't read them yet, it is highly suggested that you start with the first two books in the series: Blood Sucking Fiends (a Love Story), and You Suck (a Love Story). That said, you don't really need them to follow the story line or enjoy this book. In fact, you may even enjoy it more if you've not read the first two books, as several amazon reviewers thought this was the weakest of the three novels. (since I've not yet read the first two, I couldn't really tell you).

Having just read Her Fearful Symmetry and needing something a bit lighter, this was the perfect palate cleanser for me.

The average review over on Amazon is 4 stars.  I gave it 3 stars, because I've read better novels by Christopher Moore. All in All, it was still a very enjoyable and quick read.
